Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for Digital Asset Management Platforms, published November 4, 2025, evaluated 17 vendors — including Acquia, Adobe, Aprimo, Bynder, CELUM, Cloudinary, Fotoware, Frontify, Hyland, MediaValet, OpenText, Orange Logic, PhotoShelter, Sitecore, Smartsheet, Storyteq, and Wedia — under a category renamed from “DAM Systems” to “DAM Platforms,” reflecting a market shift toward built-in governance and automation rather than passive storage. Notably, Canto was dropped from the 2025 report because, according to Gartner’s own assessment, it no longer met the platform’s evaluation criteria — a signal of how much the bar for “DAM” capabilities, including version governance, has risen.
Aprimo was named a Leader in that same report and, in March 2026, launched what it calls “Agentic DAM,” described in its own announcement as moving “digital asset management from task-based AI assistance to governed, continuous execution across the content lifecycle.” It also posted the highest “Current Offering” score in Forrester’s Q1 2026 Wave for DAM Systems, at 4.38 out of 5. This points to a broader industry direction: version control as a static log is increasingly treated as a baseline, with AI-assisted governance layered on top to flag risky changes or suggest approvals automatically. Lyvio, the AI-native DAM from Wedia — also among the vendors evaluated in Gartner’s 2025 report — applies this logic through its Brand Control component, which runs automated compliance checks across asset versions rather than relying solely on manual review.
An Honest Limitation to Keep in Mind
Version control isn’t a solved problem industry-wide. A Bynder customer flagged in a community post dated February 25, 2025, that “it is not currently possible to separate versions specifically in Analytics” on that platform — meaning usage data stays aggregated across every version of an asset rather than being tracked per version. It’s a reminder that even leading vendors have gaps, and that evaluating a DAM’s version control should include checking whether reporting and analytics follow the same granularity as the version history itself.
Getting version control right is also foundational to a wider goal: establishing a genuine single source of truth for brand assets, where teams anywhere in the organization can trust that the asset they’re pulling is the current, approved one — not a guess based on a filename.
